The Significance of Poker Stack Size

Poker stack size tells a lot about us at the table. In fact, it can affect our strategy. Believe it or not, poker stack size can tell people how good we can play the game. Thus, we must be careful what implied messages we send across the table through our poker stack size.

If we make a buy-in for a small amount of chips it may reflect non-confidence in how we play poker and how weak our winning strategy is. Small poker stack size might project an image of loose or passive playing and fear of losing money. Hence, it won't do in poker to just have "one try" at the game to see how lucky we are tonight. This means we buy-in for a trial chip stack - which means a few chips - and sharp players will see through us and make poker fish of us.

Players with small poker stack size are not seen as risk takers. They are deemed as mere callers in the game just contributing chips to the pot. And good players will at once make call stations out of them. With small poker stack size we will be hard up chasing flush and straight draws to the turn or river and even run out of chips in the process. Trying to speculate with suited connectors have every chance of coming up with a draw when supported with a large poker stack size.

Bluffing becomes more meaningful and feasible with a big poker stack size. It will mean nothing to bluff a player when the player sees our small poker stack size. In the event that we really hold something strong, the opponent will simply fold and we get almost nothing with our premium hand. There's no way we can slow play a premium hand with a small poker stack size. However, if we have a $200 or $400 poker stack size, bluffing would become very effective.

Remember that a huge poker stack size increases the worth of bluffing. This results to having insignificant hands on the losing side. Without draws or bluffs, top pairs are likely not to get paid off with a big poker stack size. Middle pairs are unlikely to pay off big sums with the pot in view.

Hence, we see how significant poker stack size is at the table. We're better off carrying big "show money" with good bankroll management, than bring a small sum which we would all lose in the game.
